How Trump and Harris Polls are preparing for their first head-to-head debate

Trump and Harris Polls

The AmaNews21 – The first presidential debate of 2024 disrupted the White House contest, trump and harris polls therefore undermining President Joe Biden’s chances of reelection and maybe permanently changing the path of the nation.

Planning for the high-stakes confrontation has already started with so much is at danger in next month’s debate – which will be the first time former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris see each other at close range.

Originally attending over four decades ago at Howard University, the historically Black institution in Washington, DC, Harris underwent her first official debate preparation session earlier this week and is closely working with a seasoned Trump stand-in. Meanwhile, Trump has hired one of the vice president’s ex-rivals to assist with the preparations: Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democrat candidate from Hawaii who ran for president in a crowded field included Harris.

Following considerable back and forth, Trump and Harris agreed last week to the September 10 debate initially scheduled by Trump and Biden. The host network, ABC, said Friday that it will take place at the Philadelphia National Constitution Center.

In the weeks after the first presidential contest between Trump and Biden on June 27, the political terrain in the United States and the fortunes of the two main parties have fundamentally changed. The poor performance of the president that evening destroyed the faith of his party and supporters, who then greatly pressured Biden to withdraw from the contest. On July 21, he finally did and supported Harris, therefore providing the Democratic Party with a desperately needed shot in the arm and a new standard bearer.

Swing state polls and national polls reveal a race that has rapidly narrowed among rising excitement for Harris within her own party and fresh consideration from voters formerly turned off by a Biden-Trump repeat.

Trump has struggled to accept a reality he apparently brought to pass by defeating Biden in their head-to–head contest.

“I should have been a little bit easier,” Trump said at a press conference Thursday. “Your debate performance was terrible, someone commented. “Why?” I asked. “Because you drove him out of government.”

Harris, who has not set foot on a debate platform since confronting Mike Pence, the erstwhile running mate of Trump, is under preparation and will become more intense after the Democratic National Convention next week in Chicago.

Several individuals involved with the preparation told amanews21 a team of Democratic strategists visited Harris at Howard earlier last week, including Philippe Reines, a close friend of Hillary Clinton who is replaying Trump at the behest of the Harris campaign.

People familiar with the preparations include also Karen Dunn, another long-time Clinton advisor who assisted Harris in getting ready for her vice presidential debate in 2020. According to a source familiar with the planning, former Harris aides Rohini Kosoglu and Sean Clegg are also working with the endeavor.

First to document the discussion planning include Reines was the Washington Post. The participation of Kosoglu and Clegg was originally mentioned in the New York Times.

Trump, however, has resurrected the strategy used before of his June debate with Biden, conducting less official policy sessions between campaign visits and rounds of golf including close aides, advisors, and supporters.

First reported Friday by the New York Times, Gabbard’s participation was verified by Trump campaign official Karoline Leavitt amanews21. Left the Democratic Party in 2022, Gabbard has found a place in Trump’s entourage and was even under occasional discussion as a possible running mate.

Trump’s curiosity in Gabbard as he gets ready to meet Harris next month stems in part from the noteworthy interactions the former congressman had with the vice president during their 2020 contest. While Gabbard in another questioned Harris’ record on criminal justice, Harris in one debate attacked Gabbard for her foreign policy views.

Trump and Harris

Mostly seen as a gadfly and anomaly during her Democratic primary candidacy in 2019, Gabbard’s assault on Harris’ record as a prosecutor may have had the most direct influence on the outcome. Harris had ready for the attack, and by following comments Gabbard was making in interviews, aides to the then-California senator were able to predict not just that Gabbard would be the one to launch the attack, but almost the phrasing of the question given the attention paid to her attorney general record at the time. Later on, they claimed they were startled by how much Gabbard could shake Harris and that it helped lock Harris into a spiral her campaign never recovered from.

Trump asked many of the Republicans he thought might be a running mate to chat about topics and possible talking points as he got ready to meet Biden. Gabbard lately adds to that mix.

“Do not need traditional debate prep; will continue to meet respected policy advisers and effective communicators like Tulsi Gabbard, who successfully dominated Kamala Harris on the debate stage,” Leavitt stated.

Trump has agreed to two more debates with Fox News and NBC and pressed for more ones. Agreeing Thursday to an October 1 debate sponsored by CBS News, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Harris’s running mate, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz agreed Calling on Walz to agree to more, Vance, like Trump, argues for “as many debates as we possibly can.”

Harris is open to a second debate, according a top campaign aide, but the specifics will not be resolved until the first debate is under way.

Publically, however, the campaign has declared otherwise. “The debate about debates is over,” Harris campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler said in a Thursday statement. Trump and Harris Polls
